Oman 'seriously' considering overseas farm opportunities

By Gulam Ali Khan

In an effort to enhance food security and secure requirement of strategic staples through offshore or contract farming, Oman is seriously considering the offers for overseas farm investments.

“There is some good news. We are receiving offers for land and we are considering them seriously. We are prioritising the areas and a final decision will be taken by the government. We hope it will not be very far off,” H E Fuad al Sajwani, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, said, when asked about the government's earlier plans to explore opportunities in offshore farming.

“We have received proposals for huge pieces of land in two countries. We would like to see these formalised and signed, after which we can announce the investment opportunities.

“However, we are not restricting ourselves to these two areas and are also looking at other options. We need to ensure the safety of the identified areas, whereby we can ensure food supply upon requirement ,” H E Sajwani added
