Jakarta, Indonesia.  Indonesian group Aliansi Gerakan Reforma Agraria (AGRA), or Alliance of Agrarian Reform Movement, held a forum on land reform on 15 January, 2010, in Jakarta.  The forum was part of the international People’s Year of Rice Action (YORA), jointly coordinated by Pesticide Action Network Asia and the Pacific (PAN AP).

The forum was attended by 100 people including small farmers, landless peasants and consumers.  It aimed to highlight the politics of land reform within the current Indonesian administration and develop a plan of genuine land reform implementation.

In addition to discussions, a paper prepared by AGRA was distributed to the participants.

The paper explored the new phenomena of national and global land grabbing both for the interests of food/rice production and energy, the food crisis and the responses from the peasant movements to these land grabs.

Responses from the peasant movements to land grabbing were highlighted, especially the importance of reclaiming rights over land.  There was a strong call genuine agrarian reform, guided and implemented by the peasant organizations.  The group agreed that educating the peasant movement would be a key to genuine land reform implementation and the position of peasant movements as strong political bases in the future.
