Mr. Augusto Mafigo, President of the National Peasants Union (UNAC) and Raymond Epp of the TPP Citizen's Network (Japan) sign the Statement at the Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan, 26 February 2012.

Joint Statement Between UNAC and the TPP Citizen’s Network

Whereas economic globalization is a force that is destroying the livelihoods of small scale farmers, rural communities and impoverishing the soil through destructive agricultural practices.

Whereas trade agreements such as the TPP threatens democratic decision making and concentrates power and control over the economy in the hands of transnational corporations who have no commitment to local people or local places.

Whereas investment policies that encourages “land grabbing” in Africa and other nations in the global south is threatening the lives of peasants and artisans leading to political instability and the possibility of war over the basic necessities of life such as food and water.

Whereas the global food system is neither economically just nor is it ecologically sustainable.

Therefore, in solidarity with one another, the TPP Citizen’s Network and UNAC commit themselves to the following:

•We commit ourselves to promoting an economy whose starting point is the needs of local people and the nurturing of the land. This is embodied in the concepts of localization, “feeding the family first” and food sovereignty.
•We commit ourselves to the principle of economic justice for local economies, small scale farmers and artisans.
•We commit ourselves to opposing the forces of globalization and unjust trade agreements such as the TPP.
•We commit ourselves to opposing the ProSavana Programme so that neo- colonial land grabs will come to an end.
•We commit ourselves to recognizing the sacred nature of land and to promoting a culture of caring and peace rooted in the best of our religious and cultural traditions.
