Bulgaria extends ban on farm land sale to foreigners

A total of 171 lawmakers voted in favor of extending the moratorium, while 38 were against and 12 abstained from voting.

Bulgaria’s Parliament has controversially decided to extend the existing moratorium on the sale of agriculture land to foreigners.

The moratorium will remain in place until January 1, 2020.

A total of 171 lawmakers voted in favor of extending the moratorium, while 38 were against and 12 abstained from voting.

The proposal for extending the moratorium was made by the ultranationalist anti-EU party Ataka, a key ally of the Socialist-led coalition government.

The majority of MPs from the opposition center-right GERB and the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party backed the proposal, while the ruling liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms voted against. The 12 MPs who abstained were from GERB.

The European Commission has already warned Bulgaria with retributive action if the country fails to lift the ban on sale of agricultural land to foreigners starting 2014.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski said extending the moratorium would be unpractical and breach agreements with the EU.
