Residents told to support Kwale sugar firm

by Alloys Musyoka

KWALE leaders have assured sugar cane growers they support Kwale International Sugar Company whose 400 acres of cane were burnt recently.

Speaking on their behalf, Senator Juma Boy said residents should guard the Kwale International Sugar Company.

This is not the first time that the company's crops have been torched by local residents, upset over the company having taken their lands, as shown in this report from 2011.

“I have spoken with all county leaders, including Governor Salim Mvurya, and they fully support this investment,” he said.

Addressing growers at Greenwood Hotel in Fahamuni, Msambweni, yesterday, Boy said the sugar firm aims to improve the county's economy.

He said leaders are ready to initiate dialogue between residents and the company to solve problems that have been raised.

“We have received reports of locals claiming the company's security guards are not from the area. There are also land disputes. Such claims should not be raised,” Boy said.

He was accompanied by former Kwale County Council chair Mshenga Ruga and Lunga Lunga MP Khatib Mwashetani.

The senator urged residents to stop burning sugar cane.

He said problems can be solved amicably.
