South Korean investors to grow corn in Indonesian islands

ANTARA, January 28, 2009

South Korea's companies -- PT Daewoo Logistic Indonesia and Cheil Jedang Samsung -- will jointly build an integrated corn industry on the islands of Buru and Sumba with an investment of US$50 million.

The two companies will start development soon and the project is expected to be completed and start producing in mid 2009, the National Corn Council said.

Around 12,000 hectares of lands are available on each of the islands for corn fields expected to produce 30,000 tons of corn grains a year, the Council chairman Maxdeyul Sola told the newspaper Investor Daily.

The Korean companies will build processing facilities to produce corn flour, animal feed, methane gas, and ethanol, Sola said, adding the entire production will be exported.
