In address to nation, Zelensky calls for referendum on land purchase by foreigners

The president noted that between the first and second readings in the Verkhovna Rada, the draft law on the land market will secure the right to sell and buy land only for Ukrainian citizens and companies founded by Ukrainians.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky in a video address to the nation, released Monday, November 11, said that the issue of farmland sales to foreigners and companies founded by foreigners will be submitted to an all-Ukrainian referendum.

The president noted that between the first and second readings in the Verkhovna Rada, the draft law on the land market will secure the right to sell and buy land only for Ukrainian citizens and companies founded by Ukrainians.

"Foreigners and companies that have foreigners among their founders will be entitled to buy Ukrainian lands only if the people of Ukraine consents to this in an all-Ukrainian referendum," the president added.

Zelensky noted that the corresponding point will be enshrined in the bill, which is expected to be adopted by the Verkhovna Rada.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on November 12, deputies will consider bills on the land market at their first reading, according to a schedule posted on Parliament website.
