Land and the right to food

Report of the Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Michael Fakhri

Summary

In the present report, submitted to the Human Rights Council pursuant to Council resolution 58/10, the Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Michael Fakhri, discusses how land and water are the basis of life. He notes that treating land like a commodity and a resource is one of the most destructive global practices and a major cause of hunger and starvation. He outlines the problems of the immense concentration of land in the hands of corporate actors. He also outlines important legal tools to counteract this destructive force, such as the Convention to Combat Desertification, tenure rights, and the right to land and territory.
