Other countries could grow their own crops here

There's a prediction that countries running out of water will buy farms in Australia to solve food shortages at home.

Greg Mason, from the Queensland Department of Primary Industries, says countries and regions facing 'peak water' include China, India and the Arab states.

He says they're looking to solve food shortages by growing crops in places like the Ukraine and Australia.

"So it's not necessarily about foreign investment taking up agricultural land for pure profit," he says.

"It's really about really about feeding their own people in those countries."
