Agrarian Ministry advocates cancellation of moratorium on farmland sales

Ukrainian News Agency | Friday, May 7, 2010

The Ministry of Agrarian Policy professes cancellation of the moratorium on the sale of farmland in Ukraine.

Agrarian Policy Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk gave the position on the First National television channel.

"The government will trigger lifting of the moratorium on sale of farmland. We cannot form sustainable development of the land market without this step," said the minister.

Prysiazhniuk said the development of the land market is one of the basic priorities of the reform in the farming sector of the country along with the development of the plant cultivation branch, the pig-breeding branch, and the dairy cattle breeding branch.

According to Prysiazhniuk, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy is also intending to move forward with an initiative to create the state mortgage farmland bank.

'We will create the state mortgage farmland bank," said the minister.

The minister noted that the country should concentrate on the reform of the farming sector ahead of all.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, in January 2010 then presidential candidate and Party of Regions leader Viktor Yanukovych did not rule out holding of a national referendum on the question of sale of farmland.

On 22 December 2009, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine extended the moratorium on the sale of the farmland until 2012.

On 29 December 2009, then President Viktor Yuschenko imposed a veto against the law expanding the moratorium on the sale of farmland until 2012.
