Costa Group has launched a new blueberry farming project on the Bolaven Plateau in Laos, starting with 17 hectares of crops at Paksong. The initiative, officially announced on March 1 by CEO Marc Werner, is expected to expand to 200 hectares over the next five years.
The project aims to develop a commercial-scale blueberry operation in Laos, contributing to the country's agricultural sector and local economy. Plans include an additional 50 hectares of plantings in 2026, with full expansion to 200 hectares anticipated by 2028.
Costa Group has been engaged in blueberry variety development for 30 years, producing varieties suitable for different climates and growing conditions. The company has experience in both southern and northern hemisphere cultivation, utilizing protective cover and substrate-based growing techniques.
According to Costa, Laos' climate and geographic location make it well-suited for blueberry production, with potential export opportunities to other Asian markets.
The initiative currently employs 65 local workers, with projections to increase to around 2,000 as the farm expands. Employment opportunities are expected to cover various roles, including farm labor, horticultural specialists, and management positions.
The project has received support from Laotian officials, including the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Malaythong Khomasith, and the Governor of Champasak Province, Alounxai Sounnalath. The Australian Government has also expressed support, with the Australian Ambassador to Laos, Megan Jones, and embassy staff engaging in discussions on the investment.
Costa's blueberry varieties are grown in several countries, including Australia, China, Morocco, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and across the Americas. With this new development, Laos joins the list of countries involved in Costa's international berry production.
