A group of 30 trainees from Kyrgyzstan's agriculture sector were in Puyang to exchange ideas and seek business opportunities with Chinese enterprises, with more than 10 potential agreements being reached.
Thanks to the railway and other projects, former Soviet bloc countries like Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan smell opportunity for boosting agricultural exports to China. So does Russia.
Ten Chinese firms are close to reaching final investment deals with an agricultural cooperation zone in Kyrgyzstan, following the entry of another six Chinese firms last year.
Once Kyrgyzstan joins the Eurasian Economic Union, due for early 2015 and so far consisting of Kazakhstan, Belarus and Russia, it will have both the obligation and a chance to allow investors from partner countries to lease its farmland.

A rights-based vision as brought forward by the FAO guidelines still bears the risk of reinforcing unequal local power structures. Instead, more long-term strategies for the protection of customary rights are required. Thus, a moratorium on ‘land grabs’ would be most appropriate.
