The Republic of the Congo’s national oil company Société nationale des pétroles du Congo (SNPC) is working towards developing a carbon credit market in the country to offset greenhouse gas emissions. The company is currently establishing a certification and commercialization system for carbon credits while investing in the creation and management of forest plantations.
The reforestation and agroforestry program aims to reforest 50,000 hectares and restore areas of high biological value. The Eco Zamba program – an SNPC-led reforestation initiative – will also serve to offset the SNPC’s carbon emissions, creating a viable carbon credit market in the Republic of the Congo.
Up to 40,000 hectares will be planted to combat greenhouse gas emissions while the remaining 10,000 hectares will be used to develop the country’s agricultural sector. According to the SNPC, over 1,000 hectares of trees have been planted on the Batéké Plateau savannas as part of the country’s Eco Zamba program since its launch in 2023.
The Republic of the Congo’s government formalized the temporary allocation of 168,720 hectares in three districts of the Plateaux Department to the SNPC for the project.
