UN Commission raises concerns about MIFEE with Indonesia

Acting on the letter which 27 organisations sent a few months ago, the United Nations Commission on the Elimination on Racial Discrimination has written to the Indonesia’s Ambassador to the UN, raising concerns about MIFEE.

Although the CERD has not launched its own enquiry to check facts, it nevertheless echoes the concerns raised by the 27 organisations, that MIFEE involves the “massive seizures of traditional indigenous lands, use of forced labour, and the alleged failure of the state party to implement the Papuan Special Autonomy Law.

The CERD requests that Indonesia responds to the allegations by January 2014. However, it also  regrets that Indonesia has not filed its periodic reports to the comission for three years.
